How to perform an extraction using the separatory funnel? Place the separatory funnel （unstopped）large enough in a metal ring firmly clamped to a ring stand or upright support rod.. Close the PTFE stopcock and fit tightly.The nut on the threaded end of the stopcock must be tightened so that the stopcock fits snugly and yet can still be rotated easily.· Pour the cooled aqueous solution to be extracted using a short-term powder funnel into the separatory funnel. Do not fill the funnel more than half at this point. Add the washing/extraction solution equal to approximately one-third the total volume of the aqueous solution. and place the stopper on top.· Take the separatory funnel out of the ring and grasp its neck with one hand ,holding the stopper down firmly with the index finger. Invert it slowly and open the stopcock immediately to release the pressure from solvent vapors. Close the stopcock ,shake the mixture while inverting the funnel several times,open the stopcock to release the pressure. Repeat the shaking and venting process five or six times to make sure the absolute mixing of the two phases. ·Place the separatory funnel back in the iron ring and wait until the layers have completely separated .Then remove the stopper and drain off the bottom layer into a labeled erlenmeyer flask. Pour the remaining layer out of the funnel through the top opening into the other receiving flask.
